These dedicated parishioners assist the celebrant in distributing Holy Communion during Mass. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may distribute at school, weekend and holy day liturgies.

St. John Vianney needs over 50 Eucharistic Ministers a week!

Initial and ongoing training is provided.

The Eucharist constitutes the very life of the Church, for the Lord said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

John 6:51

Your interest to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion reflects not only a response to your Baptismal call to serve the people of God, but also a commitment to Christ as you share in the preaching, teaching and leading aspects of the Church. You offer the Eucharist, recognize the Body of Christ in those to whom you offer Eucharist and ultimately you act as the Body of Christ by fully participating in the life of the parish and the wider community.

Your willingness to commit to a monthly schedule, to prepare properly for your service and to arrive on time dressed appropriately for Mass, further reflects that commitment.

Requirements to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion:

  • Be a registered member of St. John Vianney or another Catholic Church
  • Be a practicing, confirmed Catholic
  • Demonstrate a mature demeanor and a willingness to serve fellow parishioners

Ministry Scheduling
Many ministries at Saint John Vianney are scheduled through Ministry Scheduler Pro Internet-based software, especially the liturgical ministers—those that support and surround the Mass. This includes altar servers.

Ministers may request substitutes, volunteer to fill others’ substitute requests, and update personal information and scheduling preferences using the Web Terminal Login for Liturgical Scheduler Pro.

Prayer for a Eucharistic Minister

LORD,
as the apostle John
stood next to your Son’s cross,
so I am privileged to stand
next to your altar-table
and serve in the holy sacrifice of the Mass.
In a long tradition of priestly people,
I am grateful for the honor that is mine.

May my behavior
and the attitude in my heart
reflect that holy honor
as I strive to serve in a sacred way.
With awe and wonder,
I will hold in my hands
the Body of Christ
and his Precious Blood,
so that my sisters and brothers
may be fed with the Food of Life.
Make my heart and hands clean.

Free me from anything of vanity and pride
that might divorce me
and the service that is mine
from the heart of the divine mystery
residing in this holy meal.

May I, with your constant assistance,
truly wait upon you and your people
in this holy liturgy of praise and adoration.

Amen.
